A collaboration with Delia Kulukundis.
The National Mall is America’s primary public landscape and symbolically establishes relationships between people, government and history. Despite the diversity and intensity of use of this landscape, there is a missing scale of spaces for individuals or small groups. This is a significant gap in the symbolic language of the Mall, as well as a missed opportunity for the construction of public life.
Our proposed design inlays this missing set of spaces scaled for individuals and small groups. Microclimate analysis guides the proposed large-scale interventions in the bosques, as well as the design of smaller spaces for gathering and movement, including warm and cool paths and stopping places.

The National Mall is America’s primary public landscape and symbolically establishes relationships between people, government and history. The Mall is used for large-scale gatherings of national significance, for voicing dissent, as a tourist destination, and as an everyday space for workers in the surrounding area. Despite the diversity and intensity of use, there is a missing scale of spaces for individuals or small groups. This is a significant gap in the symbolic language of the Mall, as well as a missed opportunity for the construction of public life and comfort for visitors. Recognizing the dignity of individuals and accommodating them at the scale of the body are necessary conditions for fostering constructive interaction.
