The Freight Yards is a thirty-five acre landscape of industrial railroad traces and floodplain ecology. Currently, the site is slated to be cleared and replaced with recreational fields. By inserting new uses into the existing historical and ecological structures, I sought to design a space that combined both designed and wild elements into a multi-functional public space and infrastructure.

The Freight Yards is a thirty-five acre landscape of industrial railroad traces and flood plain ecology. Currently, the site is slated to be cleared and replaced with recreational fields. If this plan is enacted, remnants of the former freight yards and the emerging woodlands and meadows would be lost.
This proposal questions if recreational programs can be accommodated in the existing site, maximizing the city’s investment in the space and utilizing Trenton’s industrial assets. Located less than a mile from over 5,000 of Trenton’s students and over 6,000 residents, the site has the potential to function as an educational, neighborhood and city-wide public landscape. There is also an opportunity to manage storm water on site as well as the varied flood levels of the creek, adding an important function to an already dynamic space.
By inserting new uses into the historical and ecological structure that already exists, a new type of public space could be created in the city. It would be neither park nor wilderness, but merge elements of both into a hybrid multi-functional landscape that would be uniquely suited to Trenton.
